Sarpy County has a special quirk. A person could name just about any one of its attributes and in the same breath describe a way it subverts that same expectation. For example, Sarpy County is the smallest in the state of Nebraska in terms of land, but in population it’s growing the fastest. It’s an area that’s home to five distinct cities with their own cultures and histories but they are simultaneously a part of a united cities identity. If you look at the big picture, you’ll see it is a major engine of dynamic economic growth, but when you visit any one of its cities you’ll experience the friendly, relaxed feel of a small town, not the hustle and bustle of a major metropolitan hub. Look at a map and you’ll find the outline of Sarpy County’s borders but once you get to know Sarpy’s story, you’ll find out it’s a completely unique community that can’t be so easily defined.

“There is more than ‘Aunt Ginny came to town for Sunday tea’ in the historical newspapers and chronicles of Sarpy County,” according to Ben Justman. And he would know, as the Executive Director of the Sarpy County Museum. Preserving and promoting the rich history of Sarpy County is all in a day’s work for him and he would be the first to tell you there’s more to the story of Sarpy County than the quaint headlines of yore you might expect to find. “Sarpy County’s history traverses this nation’s history from arrows to aerospace.”
