Putting Members First: Chamber Support Through Public Policy and Economic Development

Three thousand businessess belong to the Greater Omaha Chamber. Some join for the networking, professional development opportunities, or the fantastic signature events the Chamber puts on year after year. But all of our member businesses, and the Greater Omaha business community at large, benefit from our advocacy work.

Each year, the Chamber’s public policy team identifies key issues that impact the business environment in Nebraska. Major successes from the last legislative session include the passing of LB 754, which will reduce top individual and corporate income tax to 3.99 percent by 2027, and LB 243, which increases tax credits and shifts community college general funding away from levies to state funding. These pieces of legislation will positively impact Nebraska’s ability to attract and retain the next generation of leaders, and the Chamber is proud to have a hand in this important work.

The Greater Omaha community also walked away with serious wins from the 2023 legislative session. Increases in economic development funding in North and South Omaha were secured in LB 531, and the passing of LB 727 provides extensions for various projects happening around the metro. But the work doesn’t stop at the last gavel. In the interim, LR 197 will study benefits of mega-sites for advanced manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, energy and other transformational industries.

The Greater Omaha Chamber is looking forward to reviewing the results, suggesting improvements and providing feedback on behalf of the Greater Omaha community. All of the work being done in the legislature leads to greater economic development for the region. Whether a business is opening, relocating, or expanding, the Greater Omaha Chamber isa valued partner throughout the process. The Chamber connects entrepreneurs with resources for tax reductions, employee training programs, and even provides a list of certified “Go-Ready” sites in the area. The Chamber is also an advocate for expansion in a variety of industries, including medical technologies, financial services, logistics and manufacturing, agribusiness, and military and defense.

With all of the outstanding expertise that Greater Omaha provides, from UNMC to Offutt Airforce Base, the Chamber understands that these industries are uniquely primed for success in our area. In addition to target industries, the Greater Omaha Chamber also provides support for the startup community in the area. A great example is the Chamber’s “First Customer Network”, which pairs local startups with consumers in the area. Startups and small businesses can flush out their ideas, test products, and make connections with local experts to determine market viability. Greater Omaha is a growing community of doers, learners and leaders, consistently moving the needle towards a better future for the region and its citizens.

For over 125 years, the Greater Omaha Chamber has proudly provided valuable resources for the community- from giving a voice to businesses large and small in the legislature, providing local leaders with resources for growth, and continuing to advocate for the region on a national level, the Greater Omaha Chamber has always led the charge towards making Greater Omaha a vibrant place to work and live.
